Simon damn near whimpered with relief as the train finally pulled into their station. Talk about the longest train journey in history. His skin felt like it had been sandblasted from the sheer intensity with which Michael had been staring at him for the whole ride.
Michael obviously hadn’t enjoyed it either, judging by the way he’d raced off to the baggage area a good five minutes before the train came to a halt. Grabbing his coat, Simon moved much more slowly, more than happy for Michael to be off the train and completely out of sight before he even reached the baggage area and—
His case wasn’t there.
Simon blinked at the luggage rack. His suitcase wasn’t there. And wasn’t that just the perfect way to end the most screwed up business trip that any man had ever undertaken. He looked around, uselessly, as if he might be able to spot whoever had run off with his case.
Michael.
Simon froze as he spotted Michael standing on the platform, waiting, with Simon’s case at his feet. A glance at the luggage left behind and Simon saw that Michael’s case was still there. As tempting as it was to leave it behind, Simon reminded himself that he was not going to be an arsehole. He was going to be professional.
He was never going to discuss what had happened at the hotel, either with Michael or any other living soul, but he wasn’t going to be an arsehole who left a colleague’s suitcase on a train on purpose.
Grabbing the case, Simon got off the train just in time to see Michael walking off toward the car park with Fullerton. There was no way he couldn’t have realised that he wasn’t carrying his own bag. They weren’t even the same sodding colour.
Simon caught up with them just as Michael was putting his suitcase in the boot of his car alongside Fullerton’s.
“You’ve got my case by mistake,” Simon pointed out, with forced calm.
“Sorry.” He didn’t sound sorry at all. “Thanks for grabbing mine.” Michael took it off Simon and put it in the boot with the others.
“If you’ll give me mine back,” Simon hinted as politely as he could manage right then.
Michael closed the boot. “Nonsense. I drove you here, I’ll drive you home.”
Fullerton paused as he was about to get into the front passenger seat and looked back at them, obviously wondering what the delay was.
Professional.
Having a temper tantrum and refusing to accept a lift off a colleague wasn’t professional. Telling Michael to piss off in front of their boss probably wouldn’t count as professional either.
Simon forced himself to slide into the back seat of the car. He purposely chose the side behind the driver so the only part of Michael in view would be the back of his head.
Just a little longer, Simon promised himself—he just had to keep it together a little longer. His house was on the way to Fullerton’s place. He wouldn’t even need to be alone with Michael for a second.
